Virginia Balcerek, a cherished and dedicated WGI World Championships volunteer, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 18. She was renowned for her distinctive role as “the friendly face at the bottom of the tunnel,” a role that involved welcoming performers and drawing back the curtain in UD Arena, allowing groups to embark on their most memorable performances. Her commitment to WGI spanned over 40 years, leaving an enduring impression on generations of performers, staff, and fellow volunteers.
Virginia was a pillar of the volunteer community. Her warm and welcoming nature made her a familiar and comforting presence at the World Championships for many. She was also known for her ability to connect with people of all ages and backgrounds. Beyond WGI, she extended her selfless service to many other groups and organizations, including the Midwest Color Guard Circuit (MWCGC), where she served as their entry person for decades. Her impact on MWCGC was as significant as her role at WGI, demonstrating her commitment to serving the broader community.
“There are few people as synonymous with WGI and UD Arena as “Virg” as she was affectionately called,” said Ron Nankervis, CEO of WGI. “For decades, she was a fixture at the bottom of that long tunnel, drawing back the curtain to let the bright lights welcome countless performers and instructors for the experience of their lives. The outpouring we see on social media proves how much she meant to all of us.”
A service to honor Virginia’s life will be held on Friday, November 1, at 3:30 PM, followed by the Rosary at 5:30 PM at Krause Funeral Home in Milwaukee.
Virginia Balcerek was a beacon of selfless service, demonstrating how one person can make a profound difference. Her spirit of service will forever be remembered, and her absence will be deeply felt within the WGI community.
