Raising Funds and Spirits
Jun 8, 2009

Friday, April 3, was declared “WGI Spins For A Cure Day” at the 32nd annual Color Guard World Championships that took place in Dayton, OH. Thanks to the generosity and efforts of many, a press conference was held Wednesday, May 13th at UD Arena to present $22,000 to Susan G Komen for a Cure.

The funds collected were a combination of all ticket proceeds to Friday’s events, special Spins for the Cure T Shirt sales, and proceeds from the 50/50 raffle. However, the majority of the funds came directly from efforts of the color guard performers.

WGI supplied each group coming to World Championships “WGI SPINS FOR A CURE” pink wristbands and then challenged the performers to compete to raise money prior to coming to Dayton.  They could sell the wristbands for any amount in order to raise the most money they could. Watch a special video from the event.

As fuel to the fire, WGI offered a prize for winning the fundraising competition.  The winner would have the chance to meet award winning choreographer Mia Michaels.  Mia is most commonly know from her work on the FOX television show So You Think You Can Dance.

Greenfield Central HS from Indiana won this contest, but they were joined by almost 150 other ensembles who helped raise funds.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure® is the global leader of the breast cancer movement, having invested more than $1 billion since inception in 1982. As the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists, they are working to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures.
