Performer’s Perspective
Apr 13, 2009
In appreciation of all the performer's dedication and energy, WGI has recently caught up with several performers to learn more about what they experience and deal with during the season. Charlene Doan of the Pulse Percussion recently told WGI what it’s like to be a part of such a competitive activity.
What is your history with the group you are performing with now?
I am a 3-year vet of Pulse Percussion. I started out on vibraphone in 2007, and was section leader and played marimba in 2008 and this 2009 season.
What do you do outside of the activity?
I'm a graduating senior at the University of California, Irvine with a major in business economics. I also teach 3 high school front ensembles in my area. In addition to Pulse, I will be a member of the Santa Clara Vanguard this summer playing marimba!
How do you balance marching with school, work, family, and friends?
Balancing all the activities is tough, but learning to prioritize is a big part of it. Also, having a planner and writing everything down is VERY crucial to the balancing act!
What are some achievements you've made that you're proud of?
I am very proud of what I have learned as a marimba player as well as becoming a leader! It’s helped me become a stronger performer and teacher.
What are your plans for the future?
After WGI Championships, I plan to continue working at the schools I teach at until I move in with SCV. After summer tour, I will be pursuing new adventures as a college graduate, possibly entering investment banking.
What has made the 2009 season something different and special?
I've seen Pulse grow so much as a group and an organization. We've pushed through many obstacles in our way and it makes me very proud to be a member of such a strong group. The staff and the members are extremely talented and the whole ensemble gets along so well, it makes it truly a special experience to be with Pulse every weekend.
What is the funniest thing that happened during the 2009 season?
The pit always has a great time going out together after rehearsals or shows and poking fun at each other over some tasty meals. Funniest thing.. using a toy bow and arrows to shoot people from the top of the equipment truck!
What is your most memorable performance memory from the 2009 season so far?
Feeling the raw performance power and energy coming from every one of the 40 members on the floor is such a great experience every time we are together.
What positive lessons have you learned from the activity?
I have learned so much about myself such as how to prioritize and truly push myself to new heights. I have learned that hard work truly pays off and in the end, and it truly makes me happy. With all the connections, memories, friendships and lessons learned that come with being in this activity and balancing it with every day life, I truly believe I have become a stronger person; body, mind, and soul.
