WGI’s newest fan, acclaimed choreographer Mia Michaels, is returning to the Color Guard World Championships scheduled for April 2-4 in Dayton, Ohio.
Ms. Michaels’ involvement with WGI began when she was the guest clinician at Spinfest!! in 2007. Last year she attended the world championships as a guest and witnessed the best color guards in the world vie for the championship. This year she is returning again and is playing an expanded role during the weekend to bring her unique choreography to performers and instructors in a special setting.
On Sunday, April 5, Ms. Michaels will conduct a master class on the floor of UD Arena for 500 performers at 10AM. Directors were able to sign up their performers to experience a class led by one of the leaders in contemporary dance working today, and has sold out. This “morning after” session will shift the focus from the heat of competition the previous night back to an educational approach to the “Sport of the Arts”.

“This was born out of a desire to expand our world championship event and bring unique experiences to our performers not only on the contest floor but all weekend,” said Executive Director, Ron Nankervis. “While Spinfest!! is designed for instructor education, we wanted to bring WGI’s core value of expanding our educational outreach to our performers as well. They are in for a treat.”
Mia Michaels and her inspirational and dynamic choreography can be seen weekly on Fox’s hit TV series “So You Think You Can Dance” and earned an Emmy for her work on that show.
Mia’s passionate dance moves currently grace the stage of Cirque Du Soleil’s live music concert tour, “Delirium”; and also in the long running Las Vegas theatrical production of “Celine Dion…A New Day”, at Caesars Palace. Mia has also had the pleasure of working with such stars as Madonna, Ricky Martin, Gloria Estefan, and Prince, and on commercials for Coldwell Banker, Ziploc, WNBA, Star TV and VISA. Mia is also the Artistic Director of The Pulse dance conventions, and has held faculty positions with such prestigious dance institutions as Alvin Ailey and the Joffrey Ballet, and continues to teach master classes around the world.
